Breastfeeding and Drinking

Let me set the scene..... Last night we were having visitors over. It got to 4pm and I was feeling really flat, my day had been really challenging and I really felt like a wine to try and lift me up before the visitors arrived.
So I grabbed this glass. I filled one quarter of it with wine and the rest with soda water and I drank it right after I fed Paddy. And I felt super. I had the music going, Paddy and I were dancing and I thought to myself this has done the trick.
About one hour after that I hit a major wall. I felt sick in the stomach and I got the most amazing headache. I felt ridiculous for even thinking that I needed that wine to help me through the night.
Am I destined to be without wine in my life forever? Or is it my body telling me that my one glass of wine was totally unnecessary?
Any breastfeeding and drinking stories or advice would be appreciated......

Since I am currently breastfeeding for the 5th time..I will go out on a limb and say that I am pretty sure it's more of a hormonal thing and once they are back to normal (even if you are still breastfeeding) it won't be as bad. However from experience not eating your recommended calories for the day and drinking even a bit will set you off. My experience with drinking and breastfeeding is a less then minimal but this is what I have learned the few times I have indulged.

Breastfeeding for the 5th time - man you are superwomen. I think that will be the last time I indulge for a while. I think the feeling flat bit was due to not eating well that day. I just can't seem to put enough food in my mouth to satisfy my ravenous hunger. I have made a deal with myself to eat more often during the day to keep up my energy.

I had the odd glass now and then when I was breast feeding. Like you, I would have it straight after a feed. I enjoyed every mintue of that me time, but like you, I also found I was shattered afterwards. It's no fun waking to a baby with even a slight hangover. And when you haven't been drunk in over a year even a drop can take it's toll. In your case, I think the fact you weren't in a good place before the glass made all the difference. Next time, try orange juice :) it has 4 times the effect of coffee!!!

I breastfed both of my girls until 14 months (and went staright into pregnancy again). I would indulge at least once a week in my much loved red wine. As you did, the best thing is to have a glass of wine right after you feed, followed by a glass of water. I never felt knocked out or tipsy and thoroughly enjoyed that one glass. The less I fed....the more red wine I enjoyed! Once my daughters started sleeping through the night, I admit it was lovely to sit with my hubby and have a glass or two. But I always had the same amount of water as I did with wine.
