No TV

We have been wanting to ban TV from our lives for years but could never get out of the trap of having to watch this show or having to finish the latest series of this show. The latest excuse was Masterchef - we told ourselves that as soon as the series finishes we would get rid of our TV. Hopeless!

But then the move cropped up and we decided that we would not set up the TV in our new house - Masterchef or no Masterchef.
We are on our 3rd day of no TV and I am loving it!!

It's amazing and so sad that you find yourself wondering - "what am I going to do instead of watching TV". Danny commented last night that he was driving home from work thinking "what am I going to do tonight?". It is like we are kind of lost and we don't know how to create our own entertainment anymore.

So the first night with no TV we played a game of monopoly and last night we played a game of scrabble. We took the dogs for a walk to the beach and I have almost finished reading The Australian from last weekend (I am notorious for buying that newspaper every weekend and never getting through it).

I am excited about breaking the firm grip that the TV had over us. Really when you think of the rubbish that I used to HAVE to watch on that thing - it just sucked hours out of my day. And for what - so I know if Ridge and Brooke are still together, or who got eliminated from Biggest Loser.

I am done with it! And I think that I will get so much more done on ''My List" now that my time is not being sucked from my day. Well let's hope so anyway....

Hello Maree, it's so true what you say, the t.v saps your time, it's like a drug. We are trying to watch less t.v in our house, and we don't do a lot, but a total ban Yay good for you. Enjoy your many more hours of the day.

This can be very beneficial for your future family life. When my youngest son and wife decided on children, one of the positive things they did was remove the TV from the house. Their eldest Kaelan is now 10 and little Kiera is 7. They have grown up in a huge garden, learning from watching, how to care for the plants and grow their own vegetables. How to play without the need for toys ( they have some learning toys). How to climb, ride bikes, mend things that break [no rushing out for a replacement]... they take care of everything they have. They are social interactive, intelligent, inquisitive, adept, well spoken,[ 2 languages from birth, Mum is German, Dad English]. They care about animals, cleaning and caring for their own outdoor pets. I have seen only 'positive' things in the way they have brought these two up. I compare them to the other grandchildren who have not had the same experience, but a roomful of toys, TV's, many Computer games etc and I know which children are the easiest to live with on visits.
I found my way to your blog through "down to earth".

Hi Maree, I just drove by your place and thought of you as I went by. It's a shame you have to move but good things will come from it, just make room for them and enjoy the ride.

Take care.

So many of your posts really hit home for me! I have never really watched much TV, and then when my partner and I split up recently he kept the huge TV while I borrowed a crappy tiny ancient one that has bad colour and awful reception. It's currently tucked away in a cupboard and only gets turned on about once a fortnight when I am craving the sound of human voices hehe. I think it is a great opportunity to reconnect to things that are important to you. I would love to have a partner to play Scrabble with : ) but for now I am focusing on my business - it could never have grown the way it has if I watched TV every night. Good on you for taking this step!
